A Better Understanding of Cannabis Seeds

Cannabis seeds, or hemp seeds, are the foundation of every cannabis plant. They are the result of the reproduction of male and female cannabis plants. These seeds can vary greatly in size, shape, and color, depending on the cannabis strain they come from...

They contain all the genetic information necessary to grow a cannabis plant, including the traits that determine its size, shape, resistance to diseases and pests, and the amount of cannabinoids, terpenoids, and flavonoids it will produce.

There are seven main types of cannabis seeds: regular, feminized, classic feminized, exotic feminized, fast-flowering feminized , CBD-rich feminized, and autoflowering. Regular seeds produce roughly equal numbers of male and female plants. Feminized seeds are bred to produce only female plants (99%). Fast-flowering seeds are photoperiodic varieties that flower quickly. Autoflowering seeds, on the other hand, flower automatically after a certain period of time, regardless of the light cycle.

Finally, it is essential to store cannabis seeds properly to maintain their viability (germination potential, vigor, stability, quality) over time. This means keeping them in a cool, dry, and dark environment until they are ready to be planted. The ideal place is the refrigerator, specifically in the crisper drawer for optimal long-term storage (temperature between 6 and 8°C). It is also necessary to place a device that stabilizes humidity levels (humidity control pellets) so that your cannabis seeds are stored under the most stable environmental conditions possible, as this is your best guarantee for preserving their high initial quality.

Growing cannabis from seeds

Growing cannabis from seeds offers significant advantages, as female plants grown from seeds are generally more vigorous, more resistant to diseases and pests, more productive, and of higher overall quality compared to cannabis grown from clones or cuttings. 

The best time to plant

The ideal time to plant your cannabis seeds depends on several factors, including the type of seed you choose (feminized, autoflowering, CBD-rich, etc.) and the growing environment (indoor or outdoor).

For outdoor cultivation, the best time is generally early spring, when nighttime temperatures do not drop below 15°C. Cold temperatures can slow down seedling development. The seeds then begin their growth cycle with the first light of spring and are ready to be harvested in the fall.

For indoor cultivation, the planting period is more flexible. However, you must always respect the plant’s life cycle: a growth period under 18 hours of light followed by a flowering period under 12 hours of light for photoperiodic varieties.

Here are some general recommendations:

• For standard or exotic feminized seeds, it is recommended to plant them in April.
• Autoflowering seeds can be planted at any time of year, provided you follow their specific life cycle.
• For CBD-rich seeds, please follow the supplier’s recommendations, as each variety may have specific requirements.
