Indica hybrid seeds are a favorite among GPS fans and cannabis growers around the world. Indica cannabis is an excellent choice for those looking to relax, and it’s also particularly popular in the medical community for its pain-relieving properties. Indicas produce flavorful, potent, and beautiful cannabis flowers that are absolutely dripping with resinous trichomes. As such, Indica hybrid seeds are perfect for extraction—or just a super chill session with a few friends.
In particular, Indica hybrid seeds contain some Sativa genetics. Sativas are known for their uplifting effects and characteristic tropical flavors, which complement many Indica-dominant strains well. In fact, there are many Indica-dominant hybrid strains, such as Blueberry Muffin, Girl Scout Cookies, Cookies Kush, and Strawberry Glue.
What to Expect from Hybrid Indica Seeds
Indica hybrid seeds are a combination of Indica and Sativa cannabis genes. Indica hybrid seeds offer users the best of both worlds, although this varies largely depending on the strain. Interestingly, some seeds will produce plants dominated by an Indica appearance and feel, while others may exhibit more pronounced Sativa characteristics. However, generally speaking, Indicas are shorter with broader leaves and denser buds. They also tend to induce relaxation, making them a common choice for medical use.
In contrast, Sativas are generally taller, with narrow leaves and buds that are fluffier and less compact. Thanks to creative breeding, consumers can now obtain Indica hybrid seeds with both Indica and Sativa genetics. Breeders often develop hybrid seeds with exceptionally high levels of cannabinoids such as THC and CBD.
Hemp seed breeders always select varieties with extremely low THC levels to ensure compliance with local and national hemp laws. By definition, hemp must not contain more than 0.3% THC. As such, indica-dominant hemp varieties contain high levels of cannabinoids such as CBD and CBG with almost zero THC. Consequently, indica hemp will not make a user feel “high,” regardless of how much they consume or how potent it is.
Indica Origins
Indica strains originate from the Hindu Kush mountain range, where the weather tends to be quite variable. As a result, Indica-dominant strains have developed incredible resilience to environmental changes. They can handle temperature fluctuations more easily than many Sativa-dominant strains. They also mature more quickly to adapt to the shorter average growing season.
Most indica-hybrid cannabis plants also produce denser buds than their sativa counterparts due to the plant's smaller size. Indica buds are also often bright green in color, in contrast to sativa-dominant varieties, which tend to have more varied pigmentation, such as purple, red, and blue.
Understanding the Sex of Cannabis Seeds
Silent Seeds offers many types of cannabis seeds, including regular and feminized cannabis seeds. Although regular seeds tend to be more affordable, they do not always produce the cannabinoid- and terpene-rich flowers that most cannabis growers are looking for.
Regular cannabis seeds
Regular cannabis seeds produce large, healthy plants that will develop either male or female reproductive organs during flowering. Male plants produce pollen, which female plants use to develop seeds for the next generation of cannabis plants. The male-to-female ratio in a bag of regular cannabis seeds is approximately 50/50, although this may vary slightly.
When it comes to growing cannabis for cannabinoids like CBD and THC, most growers don’t need male plants. In fact, those who want to grow the most potent buds possible should avoid letting males flower, lest nearby female plants become pollinated and start producing seeds instead of cannabinoids. To be clear, although cannabis flowers produce both cannabinoids and trichomes, they also produce seeds when pollinated. Female plants that develop seeds produce fewer cannabinoids and heavier seeds—both of which are a sure sign of a subpar smoking experience.
The easiest way to determine which hybrid indica seeds produce male plants is to grow them. When the seedlings have developed at least four to six nodes, growers can take a cutting from the top of the plant and place it under a 12/12 flowering light cycle. Within a few weeks, the cutting will show signs of its sex. Growers can use this information to determine which plants to remove from their growing environment. Because a cutting will exhibit exactly the same characteristics as its parent, forcing a cutting to flower is a reliable way to determine the sex of a cannabis plant.
Feminized cannabis seeds
Like regular cannabis seeds, feminized Indica hybrid seeds produce robust and reliable plants. However, unlike regular seeds, feminized seeds contain only female genes. There’s no need to take cuttings before sexing the plants or to monitor growing areas for rogue male plants. Those who germinate only feminized cannabis seeds will grow only female plants—and all the abundant cannabinoids that come with them.
Of course, female cannabis seeds are a bit more expensive because they require extra effort to produce. Essentially, breeders create all-female cannabis seeds by stressing the female plants just enough to trigger their seed-production response. There are many ways for breeders to create feminized cannabis seeds, the most common of which involves applying special chemicals to mature female plants. The additive stresses the female plants in such a way that they will produce seeds from their own genetics without any male chromosomes contributing to the mix.
Autoflowering seeds
Autoflowering seeds are produced by crossing hybrid Indica or hybrid Sativa seeds with Cannabis Ruderalis. Cannabis Ruderalis is a unique cannabis strain that flowers after about five to seven weeks of growth.
To be clear, autoflowering seeds can be regular or feminized and will flower automatically regardless of the season. Unlike other indica hybrid cannabis seeds, which only begin to flower when their light cycle allows it, autoflowering seeds produce plants that grow on their own schedule. Although autoflowering cannabis plants tend to be smaller and produce a smaller yield, they are ideal for those with limited space or little control over their light cycle.
Appearance and Flavor of Cannabis Indica
Since Indica plants are short and bushy with broad leaves, while Sativa plants are the opposite, you can expect a variety of appearances among the different Indica hybrid strains. When it comes to flavor, many describe Indica hybrid strains as having a tropical taste. However, the specifics will vary greatly, depending on the strain’s terpene profile. For example, consider Motor Punch, a potent Indica-dominant strain that features citrus and peppery flavors with a hint of grape and herbs. In contrast, Girl Scout Cookies has hints of herbs, pepper, and citrus. Additionally, Cookies Kush is deliciously sweet, herbaceous, earthy, and minty. The list could go on and on—the fact is that flavors and appearances vary depending on genetics, growing environment, and other factors.
Indica: Growth and Flowering
Indica hybrid seeds take about eight to ten weeks to complete the growth cycle. The timeline for an outdoor crop generally depends on the season and location, but Indica varieties typically flower between September and October. Once flowering begins, growers should start to see the development of trichomes and densely clustered buds, in keeping with the variety’s characteristic growth pattern.
Most Indica hybrids won’t grow too tall or too short, given the nature of the combination of traits from Indica and Sativa varieties. Hybrids generally develop with a medium-sized internodal spacing. They will stretch but not excessively once your lighting schedule shifts to a 12/12 day-to-night ratio. Ideally, these hybrid strains should offer high yields thanks to their Indica-dominant traits, as well as a relatively short flowering period.
How to Grow Hybrid Indica Seeds
The first step in growing hybrid indica seeds is germination. Some germination methods growers can choose from include the paper towel method or planting directly in the soil. Regardless of the method the grower chooses, they must take great care when handling the delicate seedlings.
Once the seedlings have at least three or four nodes, growers can begin feeding them a diluted fertilizer mixture. Note that growers must use carefully balanced fertilizers. The ideal nutrition for vegan cannabis should include an equal ratio of nitrogen, sodium, and phosphorus during this vegetative growth cycle. Growers should also ensure that their nutrient solution has a pH between 6.5 and 7.5 to ensure optimal nutrient absorption.
Indica plants should remain under a vegetative light cycle for two to four weeks. Special training techniques such as Screen of Green (ScroG) can improve light penetration and reduce the flowering time by up to two weeks. Essentially, this is achieved by spreading out the branches to improve light access to other lower branches.
Once the plant reaches about half its final size, growers can switch it to a 12/12 light cycle to trigger flowering. To be clear, photoperiod-dependent cannabis plants must receive 12 hours of light and 12 hours of total darkness to begin flowering. This stage typically lasts about four to six weeks and is complete once about half of the milky-white trichomes covering the flower’s surface begin to turn amber. Note that the darker the color, the more sedative the effect. Growers should harvest early for less sedation.
Pruning and Care of Indica Cannabis
The final step before consumption is to trim and cure the cannabis flowers. As mentioned, cannabis flowers are ready to be harvested when the trichomes begin to turn amber. However, growers can start pruning the fan leaves weeks in advance. This makes the trimming process faster and easier, improves air circulation, and helps the buds grow more densely.
Growers should cut the branches at the base, leaving a few nodes from which to hang the harvest. Next, fan out the large leaves, then trim the sugar leaves and shape the buds (wet pruning), or wait until the buds are dry to complete this step (dry pruning). Next, hang the branches upside down for a week or two, checking their moisture levels daily.
Once the branches snap instead of bending and the buds feel slightly crisp to the touch, growers should cut the buds from the stems and place them in sealable glass jars, filling them ¾ full, to begin the drying process.
The buds must remain in jars for a week or two, and growers must “vent” (open) the jars once or twice a day for a few minutes at a time to release excess moisture. This process ensures that the buds dry slowly and evenly by drawing moisture from the stems through the flowers. It also preserves the flavor and cannabinoid content and allows for a longer shelf life.
Common Effects of Indica Cannabis
Many people associate the phrase “indica = in-da-couch” with indica-dominant hybrids. However, this generalization doesn’t fully explain how an indica hybrid will affect someone. That’s because there’s much more to the cannabis experience than just “up versus down.”
In fact, the effects that Indica cannabis might have on a person depend heavily on the unique terpene profile of the strain. To clarify, terpenes refer to the plant’s aromatic compounds and greatly influence the nuances of each individual experience. For example, myrcene (a musky, earthy terpene) can cause a feeling of lethargy and reduced pain. Conversely, the terpene limonene (with a predominantly citrus-based aroma) is more likely to induce heightened creative sensations. Both of these terpenes (and more) could be present in a single strain. Notably, unique terpene profiles can alter a user’s experience accordingly.
As such, when determining the best Indica strain for a user’s specific needs, consider the complete cannabinoid and terpene profiles.
