The NHS advises keeping the medication in its original packaging, which includes a dispensing label identifying the patient, as well as a copy of the prescription or a letter from the prescribing doctor. There is no legal requirement to carry these documents, but doing so is strongly recommended.
\n\n\n\n\"Medical cannabis cards\" issued by certain clinics can facilitate verification, but no card creates a legal right to possession. Furthermore, some cards sold by third-party organizations do not verify that the holder is actually a legally prescribed patient, which contributes to the confusion.
\n\n\n\nIn terms of public opinion, a YouGov poll from April 2026 shows that the country remains divided on recreational legalization, with similar levels of support and opposition. This divide fuels the feeling among many patients that they must constantly justify a treatment that is, in fact, legal.

Independent, large-scale studies on patient experiences remain rare.
\n\n\n\nFor British patients, the “new regulations” are seen above all as a welcome symbolic and practical recognition—though one that is still largely insufficient. The 2026 police guidelines offer a measure of security, but they do not erase years of mistrust, stigma, and uncertainty, particularly regarding driving. As for the issue of cost and access through the NHS, it remains unresolved.
